The upcoming Cocoa kitchen, at first glance, doesn't really seem to be all
that different from the Carbon kitchens I went to when we were a Carbon
house. The kitchens were quite helpful. We got direct access to Developer
Technical Support (DTS) personnel and other software engineers, which was
very helpful for solving the problems that moving from the Toolbox to Carbon
presented. To some degree, I also found the kitchens useful for getting a
grok on Carbon in general.
Your typical kitchen day was coming into the lab in the morning, pounding on
your software, hearing some talks from technology managers, and getting help
with your problems from the wonderful DTS folks who would, at times, refer
your questions to engineers working on the technology in question if an
answer was not at hand. I think that if you go there with specific problems
you are needing to solve, you will get the most benefit in return.
All considered, I think this decision is a no-brainer because it's a chance
to mingle with people who are pretty much in the same boat as you and there
is direct access to able help while you are learning. The incredible thing
is that it is free, and all you need to pay for is your own maintenance
(which can be, admittedly, expensive). I am very pleased that Apple
continues to offer these opportunities.
