Hey, I'm a contractor. Spending as much time as the client wants on copy
protection damn well DOES earn me much money. In one case, I actually made
MORE off the copy protection than the actual program.

Well, for ME, I lose out by *not* spending as much time as they want
implementing copy protection, no matter how silly, so your argument earns a
rousing cheer of complete indifference.
There is, I grant, the argument to be made that I'm to some degree acting
irresponsibly to the client by doing what they want they want done after
only token opposition (I've never implemented any copy protection more
complicated than "check the name of a mounted volume" without at least
mentioning my belief they're wasting their money, my sense of responsibility
does stretch *that* far) rather than standing up for common sense and making
a blanket refusal to do any work that I believe isn't worth in the real
world the value they place on having it done.
That, of course, is a silly argument. My job is to make ME money, and if
their ideas of how my work will make THEM money I happen to think are
completely wrongheaded, that's not my problem, is it? And if I have indeed
voiced a concern that their priorities are misplaced, and they ignore said
concern, then ought I to feel any guilt about doing what they want done? Of
course not, yes? After all, it's POSSIBLE that I could be wrong, yes?

you'll find that it's really not worth the money.
Who is this "you" to which this notion is addressed? Not I, certainly! Hell,
copy protection bought the nice fast machine I'm typing this on!
