My argument is that stopping these types of crackers is not going to earn you much money. Are these people likely to pay for the software if they're unable to crack it? The reason you only hear about stopping "casual piracy" is because that's where all the money is. The other thing to consider is that you can almost always rely on the fact that the crackers out there are smarter than you are (and always will be). If they want your software bad enough, it's only a matter of time before they develop a crack for it. Take a look how long it will take to implement these complicated anti-piracy measure. Figure out how much it's going to cost you to do that, then compare that with what you may lose if you don't. When you consider the number of sales you lost because you released your application "X" weeks later, and the added support that's inevitable when you have a complicated scheme like this, and you'll find that it's really not worth the money.

While 'tis true that anything that executes in memory is fundamentally
crackable, downloading necessary code fragments on the fly from your secure
server over the Internet is a method that requires a hell of a lot more work
to crack than "a few no-ops". More importantly, anyone capable of doing it
almost certainly has more remunerative and/or interesting things to spend
their time on.
