He sat down thinking that he could download 300MB (he complains about its size? what???), grab a "Cocoa for Dummies" book and be off writing something good without even understanding the nuances of the Macintosh approach to user experience.

well that's the all point.
you could sat down, download 121 MB (.NET dev SDK), buy C# for dummies and start coding happily at once.
It worked for me.

Maybe it's wrong, but it's a better user experience and it's more productive.
Ok, that might be evil, but weaker mind easily fall prey of such traps ...
