get the list of computer on the network

I'm trying to get (and display) the list of computer on the network.
I'm a bit at loss as we only have 2 mac here, and I'm not sure it's a proper network, I mean one is a laptop, our mac are not registered on any name server, etc ....

what I need is (if possible) user friendly name, which I could use to initialize NSSocketPort.
initially I create a TextView where the use could enter computer's name.
Alas, Apple Talk or rendezvous name proved to be un-ping-able and un-join-able through a NSSocketPort.

Any tip ?
is it because of my network setting ?

well you get the picture, any advice ?
