[Yellow Box for Windows, killed]
However, Apple later reneged on that promise and killed the
technology.
Do we know that for certain? I'd be surprised if Apple actually killed
Yellow Box for Windows.
They did. It is not possible to license. Heck, you aren't even
allowed to use the parts that are still exist and are included in WO
for anything but WO development, even if you were willing to shell out
a WO license for each seat.
It seems like it would be a fairly easy thing to maintain, once done,
and when the time comes to write a big Windows application (like, say,
iTunes), Yellow Box for Windows might be a pretty darned cool thing to
have lying around.
I think there's a misunderstanding here: they didn't kill it in the
technical sense, but in the legal sense.
(Wouldn't it be neat if we heard next week that, among all the other
goodies, the release of Panther would include a significant subset of
core technologies for Windows?)
Not going to happen. When Apple made the promise of YB/Win, I never
could figure out what the business case for that, apart from a sudden
urge to satisfy suicidal tendencies. It seems that Apple came to the
same conclusion, and I am not aware of anything that has changed the
situation in the meantime.
