I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I'm in the process of starting up a
company specifically to do a couple of vertical market apps targeting the
Mac using Cocoa, and potentially support Linux via GnuStep.
Is it paradigm shifting? No.
I'm targeting the clinical medical records and bankruptcy trustee accounting
markets. Because of the lack of ready to use DB access, I'm deploying the
middle tier of an n-tier application via Jboss using JDBC and EJB. I'm
using SOAP for the communication between the GUI client and the middle tier.
The RDBMS layer is still a question mark. It's probably going to be Oracle
on the Sun platform, but I'm still evaluating several of the smaller
vendors, OpenBase looks intriguing, and a couple of other small SQL DBMS are
also still in the running, but at present, none of them have come out as a
standout favorite. I would have preferred to using something a little
lighter and faster, but you can't always have what you want :-).
What makes me think this is a good idea?
Cocoa is a good framework for it, the MacOS is easy to use, and both of
these markets are good markets for me because of my existing business
relationships, there's probably enough money in the projects to keep me fed
and happy for a couple of years, but they aren't projects that I expect to
be known outside a fairly small group.
