I have been doing some tests with my machine just to see if the memory
consumption problem could be associated to a specific program or to
macos. No many people are interested in the subject so I promise this
is the last message about this from my part.
I left a java application running for several hours and it consumed all
the available memory, I tried with a different application and it
happened the same thing.
As you know, java programmers do not have to free the resources/objects
allocated, the garbage collector is supposed to do it for you, but in
this mac I do not know when!. Even when the programs are not creating
new objects, the memory use increased, and even after closing those
applications the memory use was not notably reduced.
as I said in the first message, the same thing happened with other no
java applications, but the memory consumption was slower.
it seems to me that some part of the macos system is not behaving
correctly.
I also have a PC running Linux and it is automatic the comparison
between the systems, I always try to overlook the problems I have seen
in the Mac but the truth is this memory problem is just one more
problem I have found.
My PC is a generic machine I assembled, much much cheaper than this
Mac, and I haven't had a single problem with it.
This Mac is noisy, it is slow even with 512MB of mem more than the PC,
I can compile much faster in the PC. I compiled mozilla in the Linux PC
and the mac at the same time, obviously the PC finished first for quite
a lot of time and it has less memory... and I just do not have the
energy to list the rest of the problems ... even now that I am only
typing this message in Mozilla, the machine seems to be thinking what
to do with each letter I type.
I think Macs just look pretty but they do not have any other real
advantage.
as one of my friends says, Windoze, Linux, Macos, it is all the same
crap, computers never work no matter what you use.
well, things will look better in the morining ... (and may be they will
be a little faster)
a frustrated mac user and programmer,
J. F.
