Best way to create custom DMG's

Hey all,
So, you know how many developers (maybe even yourselves!) have these
very nice disk images for their distribution? Well, what is the
cheapest way to do it? I tried doing it on my own and (1) I cannot get
the background image file icon to be invisible and (2) the icons don't
stay in the right place and size!
What programs or methods are best? Hopefully, there is a free-ware
solution or a trick!
