The commercial solution has already been described.
A free solution is to use Terminal and the hdiutil tool that comes with Mac
OS X. Launch Terminal, type 'man hdiutil' (without the quotes), and press
Return to read the manual. But it's always hard to learn Unix-like tools.
There are several shareware or freeware solutions. I believe most or all of
them are GUIs wrapping the hdiutil tool. The one I use is DMG Maker, but I
am also aware of DMG Tool and DropDMG. Some or all of these have AppleScript
support. I don't have the URLs handy, so look them up on Google.
Making the background image file invisible is a matter of using any of
several disk utilities to set its Finder invisibility flag. I'm partial to
FileBuddy.
Making the icons stay in position and at the desired size should be doable
in the Finder's Show Info window, if you set them to the correct values.
