Hi,

I have been developing Mac software for more than 10 years, but have never
been to a WWDC (even though I lived in Reno.. Just 4 hours from San Jose/San
Francisco).

This year, it looks like I have the time and money to go. Is it worth it?

I am living in Europe now and have to use frequent flyer miles to get there
- just looking for impressions from those who have gone before. If it
matters at all, I am an independent developer and not tied to a big
corporation.

Comments?

I think once is fun and worthwhile the money. You'll probably enjoy yourself more if you plan beforehand, that there will be some people you'd like to meet and that like to meet you. Otherwise if you aren't the social guy, it could be boring. The key thing of these conferences is really talking and checking out the people you just know from these mailing lists.

The keynote with Jobs is a must to get that special "Apple lemming^h^h^h^h^h^hdeveloper" feeling. The content of the sessions is usually disappointing. Figure that the target audience is a developer who just bought a Mac and wants to start developing.

For best entertainment value, try the guy who heads Java development (or does he still ?), then the guy who does the WO intro (or did it last ? time). If bbum or mmalcolm get to lead a session go there as well (go to all sessions, where the presenters have the same two letters in start of their email address :) ). Otherwise check out all the sessions you are usually NOT interested in, because there you can get a nice overview of what you might be missing. What you are interested in, you'll get to know anyhow sooner or later.

The best of the WWDC is usually the after-conference events, don't miss those (beer bash, apple awards, stump the experts, BOF (that old NeXT thing) usually quite spirited.

Ciao
Nat! <- wore his Atari tee proudly on his first WWDC :-P
