Do I need to subclass NSWindowController?

I'm thinking of connecting two programs through services. Right now neither program uses custom windowcontrollers. I'd like not to have to since my NSDoc is, well, overdeveloped and I'd like not to have to split it all up. Is there a way to make a custom NSResponder class and some how put it on the event chain? Or a way to do the needed methods in NSDocument?

thanks in advance,
MW
