NSButton drawing behavior

Hello all! -
I am writing a program that will be using a fair amount of NSButtons, and would like to implement some behavior(s) similar that I have seen, but don't know how.
I am looking for a way to implement the "sliding" behavior that I have seen with Jaguar. For example, If you open a finder window, go to view->customize toolbar, you have the ability to add icons to the toolbar. When dragging a new icon to the position you would like, if it is already occupied, all other icons/buttons a shifted left/right. Are these even NSButtons? Does it have something to do with the underlying view they are placed on? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million in advance.
