Scalability isn't the best argument for not having the server remember
client state... The best argument, and the one that keeps me using CVS
even with all of its warts, is that if you need to talk to a server to
edit a file, you can't edit your files when you aren't on the network.
Sure, when you're working in an office with permanent network
connectivity, it's not a big deal, but when you are 35,000' in the air
or sitting at a coffee shop or are in a location where you can't get to
your server because a firewall is in the way, having a SCM tool that
lets you work disconnected is a very valuable thing.
