Freeform forms

I don't know if this has been covered before, but I find an amazing lack of documentation of the subject.

Does anyone know if Apple has a public API for the free=form widget like in iCal's drawer. If it isn't a public API, does anyone have an idea of a good way to create such a widget?

When you click on an entry field, the shadow for the box that appears overlaps the fields below it so I'm not sure it's an NSMatrix of any sort. I was thinking perhaps it's a small window that pops up?
