Supposedly, Carbon is based largely on the portable subset of the classic Toolbox that Apple created to support QuickTime for Windows.

Even if that's a myth, it's certainly true that a large part of the Classic/Carbon API is present in QT/Win. There's enough of it that, when QT/Win was first released, developers wanted to use it as a porting layer for their Mac apps, something that Apple discouraged.
