Troy,

Since Hiragana and Katakana are established writing systems, you don't have to worry about additional characters assigned in Unicode.

Hence, you can safely compare to U3040 ~ U309F (Hiragana), U30A0 ~ U30FF (Katakana), and UFF65 ~ UFF9F (Halfwidth Katakana).
