My guess would be that your FLASH device is formatted with a FAT file
system. Try re-formatting it (using Disk Utility) to use HFS or HFS
plus. Aside from supporting Macintosh and UN*X file attributes
properly, you'll also find that HFS(+) is a *lot* faster than FAT on
FLASH devices.
