It is very interesting that Mr. Stevens says he would love to have
gotten an RTFM response. I actually considered responding to his
question, but I stopped myself because I realized all I was going to
say was where to to read about the responder chain and the different
handling of different events.
When I post questions to other forums where I am a newbie, I generally
love RTFM responses because my problems almost always fall in one of
two groups: Either A) I am missing some conceptual information and
don't know how to ask or where to look or B) I don't understand a
nuance of the documentation and the RTFM confirms that I am at least
looking in the correct place or gives me other places to look.
However, as far as I can tell RTFM responses are strictly forbidden in
this forum and the culture here is hyper sensitive to any perceptions
justified or not of condescension. It is a shame that this forum is so
touchy IMHO because efficient transfer of technical information is
often impeded by non-technical sensibilities.
When I ask a question, all I want is an answer or guidance about where
to look for the answer. RTFM answers PERFECTLY answer my question as
long as which M is mentioned. RTFM answers are NOT criticism or
personal insults, and in many forums RTFM is accepted and welcome. In
this forum it is not. In another forum, Mr. Stevens would have gotten
more or less the answer he was looking for ;)
