However, as far as I can tell RTFM responses are strictly forbidden in this forum and the culture here is hyper sensitive to any perceptions justified or not of condescension. It is a shame that this forum is so touchy IMHO because efficient transfer of technical information is often impeded by non-technical sensibilities.

I don't think that's true. We often tell people where to look in the docs, which is a slightly more useful form of RTFM. More recently, I've also pointed people at my FAQ, which is a very similar approach.
