This is more a user question than a developer question, but then
developers who wish to ship a disk image of their product with a

How does one create a Disk Image (hopefully using Disk Util) with a
background picture on the disks, but not have the image appear as a
file on the disk?

Instead of making the background image itself invisible,
create an invisible folder (e.g. .background) and put the
background image inside it.
I found it well worth the $19.95 to purchase FileStorm, which
handles this for you as well as .dmg icon customization,
auto-display of the window on mounting the disk image,
and display of a localized license agreement.
