Hi Alistair,
Having a FAQ and the archives are good things and yes, it would be good if
people did a bit of hunting before posting questions. A couple of minutes
searching the archives at the Apple site or cocoa.mamasam.com, or a look in
a FAQ or two can often find the answer and save the delay in email. I've
read a little of your FAQ since you mentioned it in response to one of my
questions only a few days ago and I think it's pretty good by the way.
However, Apple doesn't advertise your FAQ or the mamasam archive so new list
members won't necessarily know of there existance and/or location.
For those of you who are interested Alistairs FAQ is at:
http://www.alastairs-place.net/cocoa/faq.txt
And the mamasam archive is at:
http://cocoa.mamasam.com/
I personally have found both of these very useful.
Perhaps something could be added to the welcome email for this list to
advise of this kind of thing, FAQ, archives etc. I would have no problem
understanding the statement 'The following links are NOT part of Apple but
are provided for your convenience', possibly a short note about good
practice - search the help, search the archives, search the FAQ, email the
list?

I've put together an (unofficial) FAQ that can answer many basic
questions without requiring you to wait for a reply. Please check the
FAQ before posting a question, especially if your question seems fairly
fundamental (a good example being the recent "Why does my program not
work when I give it to my friend? I built it using Xcode.", which has
been answered about five times over the last few days [and is now FAQ
4.1.13]).
Not only does doing some research (i.e. checking the documentation,
reading FAQs and checking the list archives) make sense because you may
already have the answer to your question, but it will also save you
from the occasional unhelpful response given by a frustrated regular
reader of the list in response to the same question appearing for the
umpteenth time ;-) We're only human, after all :-)
Kind regards,
Alastair.
p.s. If you come up with (or are asked) a question that isn't covered
and that you think should be, please send me both the question and a
sample answer.
p.p.s. My FAQ is nothing to do with Apple; in particular, they aren't
responsible for its content or accuracy. If you find an error in it,
please let me know and I will attempt to fix it.
