Perhaps something could be added to the welcome email for this list to
advise of this kind of thing, FAQ, archives etc. I would have no problem
understanding the statement 'The following links are NOT part of Apple but
are provided for your convenience', possibly a short note about good
practice - search the help, search the archives, search the FAQ, email the
list?

It'd be nice, and I have already expressed this desire to the list moms (currently JCR and Scott Anguish), but I think it's difficult for Apple to do this for legal reasons. One possible alternative would be for me to periodically post a message (say once a month) to the list reminding readers that there was an unofficial, nothing-to-do-with-Apple FAQ and some archives; I'd be interested to hear what JCR, Scott and everyone else feel about that idea...

Personally, I'd be quite happy to hand my FAQ over to Apple and let them maintain it, if that was an option, but I guess they're pretty busy developing new features for us to play with :-)

One comment I would make is that whilst a lot of people tell you that you should have searched the archives before posting, many people find it difficult to come-up with a set of search terms that actually locate posts on the subject that is giving them trouble. This is especially true if they only have a set of symptoms, since descriptions of symptoms vary quite widely... it's often much easier to find something if you already know (roughly) what is actually wrong.

Kind regards,

Alastair.
