AHIG and Toolbar Views

I'm trying to design a few custom toolbar views for an application I'm working on and wondering what margins are normal for a toolbar view. I looked in the AHIG but can't find any hard and fast numbers. I know the icons in normal views (at normal size) are 32x32, but what size are the toolbar tiles themselves?

Their height is easier to determine, so I did: they are 39 pixels high normally. I know that that can be changed for custom views, but I'm trying to fit in, here. (38 - 32) / 2 = 3 pixels on each of top and bottom.

Taking a normal view in a Mail compose window and eyeballing if the icons are in the center of their 32-pixel-wide space, then this matches up pretty well, and there's about 6px between icons, 3px for each icon's side (excluding icons at the end of the toolbars, which get more).

But when I make toolbar items with views that just display a block of black, I get 9px between items. 4 of margin, 1 pixel in between?

I can't verify any of these numbers in the AHIG, so I'm wondering if I should just go with 3, which seems to be reasonable. Has anyone read anywhere how much margin space should be given?
