Is there any way to get rid of the toolbar widget that appears in the upper right of windows with toolbars?

Why? Either you have a toolbar, then the user wants to be able to show/hide it, or you don't want a toolbar, then you shouldn't be using the NSToolbar class.

really? look at the System Preferences

What about System Preferences? I just looked at it. It has a toolbar, with the widget, and it's possible to change to text/small icon etc by Command-clicking on the widget. There would have to be a very good reason to remove this functionality.
