API for icons in main menu-bar
API for icons in main menu-bar

I'd like to integrate some functionality in main menu far as
some small icon changed if state, if the app changes it's state
(like power indicator or airport indicator).
1. What's the correct name of this functionality (tray items)?
2. Please point me to some API description
... which I failed to find, since I don't know the correct name...
