Fair enough... one major drawback of NSStatusItem (except that you cannot move it around) is that it requires a running application to set it up... which is a bummer as I don't have any application... on the other hand, NSMenuExtra is a simple NSBundle which you load in SystemUIPlugin... which works much better in my situation... but... NSMenuExtra introduces its own set of headaches... not officially supported... requires a menu cracker... sigh... this all sounds like a lose-lose situation no matter how a look at it...
