Come on, in the second posting of yours in this thread you stated that
"I was more concerned with a user altering a data file or the image
resources than just viewing. More so with inexperienced users
tinkering than experienced individuals ...".
I've already said that file permissions wouldn't allow you to change
the data unless you had rights.
Exactly, so it's not a security issue anymore.
Second, I don't think the feature is useless. Just because it might
not meet your personal needs doesn't make it useless. Perhaps it just
needs to be an option for Limited User accounts rather than all
accounts (ie. Admin accounts always have it).
What are you getting by allowing limited users to access the data
file or image resources? The argument for removing the "Show
Contents" is the same for having the "Simple Finder" interface.
Remove from the interface things which may cause confusion to the
user.
Perhaps you don't have to support users, but in my experience, an
option like "Show Package Contents" leads to confusion on the part of
the user. Most basic users don't understand the concept of a package
and it can just lead to confusion. They see the application as an
application (that's the whole purpose of a package). True, advanced
users may want access to the insides of that package, must basic
users don't.
What am I after? I want to keep the interface as simple as possible
so that my Mom can use it and not get confused by functionality that
doesn't do anything for her.
Are you also opposed to the Simple Finder interface? Because it's all
basically the same issue. Providing a simple interface for basic
users. I don't understand why folks are freaking ("it's a horrible
requirement") out over such an idea.
I'm not opposed to the Simple Finder interface, I'm not opposed to
simplified interfaces, I just didn't understand what the heck the
feature was for. You wrote about a feature that would keep
inexperienced users from tinkering with the contents of an application
wrapper. Now you write about a usability issue that---when put the way
you just did---doesn't sound that bad.
Actually, you're quoting Marc Blatt, not me. Wrong Mark (mine is with a
'K'). If you check the message on this thread (by Mark Munz), you'll
see I've been pretty consistent in thinking this is a nice idea to
simplify for basic users.
Still, the "Show Package Contents" action is hidden well in a
contextual menu. Do you really think that this is big problem, even
from a usability perspective? I'm not sure it is. But then again, I
wouldn't call myself an inexperienced user anymore.
Again, I think the strongest argument for removing it for limited users
is the fact there is a limited user option. The real question should be
"Why is the "Show Package Contents" menu item even available for
limited users?" What benefit does it server to give them this access?
