Would compile time speed up an appreciable amount if I put the build products on a RAM disk created with mount -fsmem or whatever that command that came up a while back on MacOSXHints (is it still around in Panther's Darwin?) I'm on a laptop, so the HD is only 4200 (I think)

I would recommend setting the preference for build-intermediates and build-products. Specifically, set it to a path that is somewhere outside of your home directory.
