I'm not convinced that it's "unacceptable", but I'm also not convinced
that it's worth the effort. Determined hackers will circumvent your
activation scheme one way or another, so all you'll have done is
delayed the inevitable. I think I'd describe it as "pointless". Plus
it's likely to upset some of your customers.
If the activation server goes out of business you might lose the app.
No way I would buy anything like that.
Some companies that use activation schemes appoint a trustee to hold
the activation codes/software so that in the event of their insolvency,
users of their software will not be left out in the cold. That, at
least, seems responsible.
I do wonder what effect this (and DRM) will have on availability of
historical records etc. in the long term. It seems to me that we might
end-up with lots of software that, aside from the fact that it's hard
to run because many of the older machines have been disposed of, may
actually not work because of features intended to prevent piracy.
Perhaps in 50 or 100 years time, museums may have to employ hackers to
crack old software for them so that they can exhibit it :-) That would
be rather ironic, don't you think?
Kind regards,
Alastair.
