I have to ask - do you think that, by preventing those 10,000 copies
from being pirated, you'll gain 10,000 sales?
No, I think that a proportion of those pirated copies will be what you
would call "casual" pirates. Perhaps as many as a thousand of those
people who would pirate the software only do so because it's easy. If
they can't pirate it then they may actually pay for it.
I only have experiential evidence on this, anecdotes and the like, from
people who try to pirate stuff and then end up paying for it when they
can't find a serial number.
In short, I think that hardcore piracy doesn't really hurt sales,
because the hardcore pirates would never pay, even if the app only cost
$1. It's casual piracy that hurts sales; the many thousands of users
who will happily use stuff for free if they can easily pirate it (for
example, by using a serial number from the monthly SerialBox) but will
consider paying for something if piracy is not an option. For a lot of
these users, they don't even consider what they do to be piracy; rather
they view it as an extended trial, and say, "I'll pay for it one day",
or, "I'll pay for it when the developer adds this feature I want" etc.
Cheers
Greg
