What about using steganography to embed a license/registration into a splash screen graphic or some other picture needed by the application? Saving/restoring the date after applying it would prevent the modified file from being detected, wouldn't this make it virtually impossible to determine where the registration info is stored? Only a before/after binary comparison would find it.

Of course, this then makes the distribution of a *registered* version quite simple...

There's no good answer to this, is there?! :)
