Hi Jerry,

Apple assumes that since their developers are far smarter than developers for other, lesser, operating systems, that you need far less information as a result of your search ;-)

It is rather difficult to tell from these results which messages I should
read, and may be one reason why amateur programmers like me keep bothering
you smart folks with the same stupid questions over and over.
Ironic, isn't it?

Am I using the "search archives" feature correctly?
WHO KNOWS. They're using the absolutely hideous ht:dig engine, or at least that was the excuse I given the last time I complained about this. Understand that I don't complain about Apple, or its development program, etc., very often. But this is one serious pet peeve with me. I wrote a search engine for a Mac developer site many years ago (which is not around today), and I used Apple's V-Twin engine. IT ROCKED. But that wouldn't run on OSX, as I never bothered to update it. I'm sure Apple could come up with something better, if only to demonstrate the sheer power of WebObjects and SearchKit. But alas, they're showing the sheer power of a third party search engine was really kewl in the mid-90s. Yes, I'm mocking ht:dig. Apple should have something better, and far more elegant than that, on their site. Hell, they should have something better than Google's search engine on their main site, if only to show that it's possible with Search Kit. Or is this a sign that we should we all abandon Search Kit and use whatever crap we can find laying around online?

If so, why is it that the best computer company in the world, with the most
advanced operating system, and the smartest people, and a large
developer-support department, do not provide something better than this?
Should we have a bake sale so ADC can purchase something a little more
handy?

You left out a vital item--Apple owns one of THE BEST indexing search engines in the universe, which is currently referred to as Search Kit. I believe the answer to your question is that Apple doesn't have time (or is willing to pay their own staff) to build a decent search engine. I really don't get it.

And another question is equally relevant--Why is there no Sherlock channel for searching any of the developer sites? Why is there no Sherlock channel for at least searching the Sherlock channel developer mailing list?

I'm going back to bed. I might be grumpy.

-Chilton
