The rule here is that messages not sent to the list should never be
copied back to the list without the originator's permission. This
applies both to all communication, whether disputative, perceived-to-be
disputative, or simply helpful -- it is sometimes the case that someone
offering off-list advice does not want the fact that they are doing so
advertised in public.
But since I can just learn to use shift when replying to Cocoa-Dev, I
guess people can just learn that they should include a statement in
letters sent to me about not wanting them to be public, if that is the
case! ;)
Despite the rule above, I have typically found it useful to prepend to
anything sent off-list:
"Private, off-list"
to ensure that there is no misunderstanding. Even if you do not
include such a warning, however, Rule 1 still applies.
