Looking pretty / adhering to control tints

Afternoon folks,

I have an app that needs to be lookin' good (i.e. it won't just be used by me and the other computer scientists here) and I thought I'd take this opportunity to familiarise myself with some of the Aqua niceties. And I have a question:

I have a custom matrix containing image button cells (i.e. they have icons on them). I'm in the process of making the icons aqua-bluey, but would like to respect those users who prefer the Graphite system appearance.

So do I make 2 images for each icon (an aqua blue and a graphite), and in the button cell's drawInteriorWithFrame:inRect: differentiate which system appearance (control tint) the user is using, and draw the appropriate version of the icon? The idea of duplicating each icon seems labour-intensive, but personally it's less than 30 icons so I don't mind doing it the "2 icons" way for this app.

Or is there a facility for Graphite-ing an Aqua blue image? Presumably you could just mess about with hue / saturation to get from Aqua blue -> Graphite (graphite isn't greyscale, I note). So when setting the button's image, you could programmatically create a Graphite copy and then draw appropriately, thus halving the graphic designer's job. This would seem to be more elegant and in keeping with the Cocoa ethos. Then again I know Aqua came after Cocoa so appreciate that not all things might be Cocoa-elegant!

Thanks in advance for any help / tips,
Ken
