Alas, it stopped working again after the next reboot. Once I found
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui, which was invalidating most of my
experiments, I eventually determined that a dubious content-type META
tag in my index.html was for some reason preventing the help book from
being recognized. Interestingly, it did not prevent Safari from
rendering it properly -- nor any other web browser I tried, nor even
Help Viewer itself if I opened my help book from Help Viewer's
File/Open menu. I can't explain why clearing the file's type and
creator had any effect, and no, I wasn't smoking.
The index.html file in my Help folder was set to open with BBEdit for
convenience in development. After I cleared its HFS Type and Creator,
Help Viewer magically worked. I consider this a bug.
My application's Help fails to appear in Help Viewer under Panther:
when I select my Help menu item it launches Help Viewer showing only
a blank page with no title. No entry for the application appears in
Help Viewer's Library menu.
The application was built on Jaguar and works fine there and on 10.1.
