It looks like Mail also writes to com.apple.internetconfig.plist (since that's all I use, and it has my account options).

However, I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to use this file. There is always a chance that one of your users isn't using one of these mail clients and forcing someone to set up an account in Mail just to get your application working might not be acceptable. I'm sure not all email clients write to this file (and if they do, I could foresee conflicts).

That said, I wonder why apple decided to stop using a system preference pane (ie well known common location) to store this info. This may be what com.apple.internetconfig has become. Does anyone know or have any ideas why apple made this change?

Matt and everyone;

Is ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconfig.plist a reliable source for the user's email address and SMTP info? I have my doubts since the Prefs panels are now moved into Mail.app now. What apps are known write to com.apple.internetconfig.plist?

It appears that Entourage.app writes to com.apple.internetconfig.plist, but Mail.app does NOT!! Maybe I should inspect both com.apple.mail.plist and com.apple.internetconfig.plist for a set of defaults?
