Hi think you're right, and this is apple is thinking.
By the way, I do not agree with you, If Apple think that the dock
should not be exposed, then they have to understand that some
developers extanding the features of MacOS X would like the same thing.
I hope developers are smart enough to use this feature when it should
be.
In my case, as I said, GeekTool displays log in the background, those
are not regular window, they display informations on the desktop, that
should *stay* on the desktop. GeekTool's users would like to use "show
desktop" exposi key/shortcut to see what is displaying GeekTool.
By the way, thank you for your point of view.

Personally, I don't think Apple should provide the API you are
requesting, and I hope a "hack or something to provide this 'feature'
" can't be found. I would bet there would be quite a few developers
that would feel that their app is special and their windows shouldn't
be affected. Suddenly, Exposi isn't very useful anymore because only
half the windows move out of the way when I press F11 and I still
can't see my desktop. I press F9, but some of the windows didn't
shrink, so I can't see them all, so this feature is useless. Exposi is
a system level function. It shouldn't be affected by an application.
I really don't see why it's a problem for your "preference pane to
display log files or pictures on the desktop" to be affected by
Exposi. I mean, Exposi is a temporary state, it's not intended to be
used continuously.
Respectfully,
Glen Simmons

This does not seem to be difficult to provide a window property to
handle this. Am i wrong ?
I'm the developer of GeekTool (http://projects.tynsoe.org/geektool/),
a preference pane to display log files or pictures on the desktop,
and many people write to me asking to not hide GeekTool when Exposi
is activated. All I can do is answer that, for obscure reasons, Apple
does not want this to be publicly available, so I'm waiting for a
hack or something to provide this "feature". Same thing for
NSMenuExtras not available to mortal developers, we have to use
things like MenuCracker...
So if somebody have informations about this, please inform us !
