Thanks to all who replied with suggestions. I was using 10.3.4 on a 2x1.0GHz G4 and Finder was more or less unusable. Switching to my GUI ftp client RBrowserLite worked fine once I followed joar's advice and used the USA servers despite the fact I'm in Europe: >20KB/s versus <1KB/s. Anyway I'm updated and happy now.
