Hi Aki,
- sorry for the late reply, I was out of town -
All these fonts have both OpenType and AAT feature tables.
Well, my whole point is that this is not true for Hiraginu (in
contrast to other Apple fonts), at least according to ftxdumperfuser
(and other command line font tools such as ttx):
I talked to the engineer working on the fonts and, yes, it is true
they don't have morx table.
They are taking advantage of "morx" synthesis functionality supplied
by ATS.
We can offer very detailed synthesis functionality for these fonts
because they have "well-known" glyph complement "Adobe-Japan-1-5".
If I understand your answer correctly, this means that ATS offers a
"synthesis functionality" that can generate "morx" data on the fly from
data included in the OpenType font. Is this true?
If so, I wonder - and that was my original point - why this very ATS
"synthesis functionality" does not generate at least a basic set of
"morx" data for Western MacRoman OpenType fonts, too. This basic set
(standard ligatures for fi etc.) should be at least as well known for
Western MacRoman fonts as it is for the Hiraginu fonts.
Moreover, what is it that actually "triggers" this ATS "synthesis
functionality" for the Hiraginu font? I.e. why does ATS actually try
(and successfully so) to synthesize a "morx" table for the Hiraginu
font, but does not try (successfully or not) to do the same for some
other OpenType font?
Bye
Uli
