Please see these older mails on the Rendezvous list, which may partly answer
your question:

However, there may be two unrelated issues here:
1. Asking questions on other subnets
2. Answering questions about domains other then .local.

These things are unrelated. The first is possible according to the current
specification (technically: a question may have TTL<254, only if the
question has TTL=255, then the software MUST check if the answer has TTL=255
as well, and is not from an other subnet). However, I do not think this is
currently implemented, and in fact: I would *not* rely on this
functionality.

The second is technically also possible (for example, I read that someone
advocated using .6. instead of .local.). However, I have not read that
specification (DNS-SD), so I can't give an authorative answer.

Perhaps you should ask this question on the Rendezvous list if you are
intersted.

Kind regards,
Freek Dijkstra
