All other things being equal I give the benefit to somebody who has
bothered to get certification...
That doesn't imply that certification has an inherent value. But I
have found that if somebody is motivated enough to go and get
certification then they will be more diligent than somebody with a
similar skill level who hasn't bothered.
But don't be too quick to judge - it may be that the 'somebody' in
question simply can't afford those accreditation's, whether because
they're still young and haven't made it, financially, yet, or because
they've simply had a hard run so far.
And speaking as a stereotypical penny-less student, I of course won't
be paying thousands of dollars for a couple of pieces of paper any time
soon. I hope that this doesn't imply I'm not knowledgeable in the
areas in question - with karma like that, I might as well start looking
for a comfortable dumpster right now. ;)
FWIW, I have a few friends (several years my senior) who work in or run
IT businesses. They're all very successful, and on outward appearance
look like the classic young guns on their way to the top (depressingly
so, in the case of those working in similar areas to myself). But the
reality of course is that they're all living hand-to-mouth, same as
myself and most others. MS or Cisco certification pales quite
significantly in the face of having the gas stay on for the next 3
months.

P.S. Sorry if this point has already been raised, but although I've
had an interest in this thread, my mail server apparently hasn't - it
deleted most of it.
