Noticing file changes

If a program is dealing with file references, in my case symbolic links, how can it notice when the file is moved or renamed (etc.) when the application is on and/or off, as iTunes does?

Also, after I archive a file wrapper, when i unarchive it, for some reason the icon and filename are lost. Is this expected behavior?
