Bad idea. Won't work if there's no Finder. Remember, we aren't in 9 anymore; Finder is now optional.

(As for the original question, I guess the helper app /does not need to be a full-fledged app of course, a plain GUIless tool, probably just a simple sh script, is completely sufficient/ would be the best idea.)
