Mail app -- anomalous behavior

  • Subject: Mail app -- anomalous behavior

Apologies for posting to the Dev list, but I struck out in the user forums and Mac newsgroups. Thought someone here might be willing to provide some insight or let me know if this is a bug.

Concerns 10.2.8, all security updates applied, pretty much a plain vanilla system (17" iMac, G4800), 768 MB RAM.

This has happened only twice, but it's odd. I open an e-mail message in Mail. The message is plain text and has no attachments. The message is from a known e-mail address, a friend on a Linux system. I open the message and the system starts beeping at me. If I close the message, it reopens again. The Mail window expands to fill the screen. I can only stop this behavior by closing Mail and closing Safari. This behavior reminds me of those Web sites that try to capture the user's attention by refusing to shut browser windows or expanding them to fill the screen. However, there was no HTML in the e-mail (in fact I have Mail set to use plain text in incoming and outgoing messages). Afterward, Mail reverts to normal behavior. Is this a Mail bug? Is it somehow related to its interaction with Safari?

FYI: System is behind a router that does NAT translation and the OS X firewall is on.

robert
