There are several issues I see with using Mail.app for this:
<snip>
3. There are some types of things that Mail wouldn't do but a
dedicated app would. One feature that dedicated app could do would be
to let you browse archives messages by the Cocoa classes they mention.
Sort of a "class browser" for mailing list messages.
And, for suggest 3.5, it could do something I wish Mail's threading
would do: allow me to get rid of all the commented stuff in threaded
messages, so I just see the new stuff that's added. Yeah, yeah, I hear
the peanut gallery now: "Get off your duff and write some Perl.."
4. With a dedicated app (or a portion thereof), one could rig up a
script to make the archives viewer appear via a command in XCode.
There's an app out there (forget the name) that is specifically
designed to search and allow hot-links between the ObjC-class
information. It's all based on HTML docs, but could probably be
adapted for mail messages (or the messages could be converted into HTML
docs with anchors..)
