Perhaps Apple should investigate whether they can (and should) limit

Are you sure this is a good idea? There are many users who may use an
SMTP server that is different from their e-mail address for a number of
reasons:
1. Sometimes a SMTP server goes down or has very poor performance, so
users are forced to use the SMTP server from one of their other
accounts.
2. Some users have an e-mail address that was provided with their ISP,
college, etc., but since they travel around with a laptop, they use an
SMTP server that is not affiliated with any of these, like .mac or
whatever, even for their ISP/university accounts so they don't have to
change the setting every time they go somewhere.
3. In the reverse situation of the above, some ISP's/universities don't
allow users to use external SMTP servers, so they are forced to use the
ISP/university's SMTP server, even with an e-mail address that may be
on .mac or web hosting.
Seems like me that there are enough legitimate reasons why a user's
SMTP server could be different from the domain in their e-mail address
to make this idea problematic.
