Why should you usually avoid subclassing? Do you mean in Cocoa or
AppKit? If so, why?
Apple has two sample apps, RoundTransparentWindow and
FunkyOverlayWindow, that show how to do this stuff.

Besides that minor point I like your suggestion - a very clever trick!
Even though you should usually avoid subclassing, in this particular
case it provides a solution that requires less code, and is probably
easier to maintain in the long run - and that is something I value a
lot.
