Ok, i know this is a very off-topic issue, but i assume, since we're
all developers here, we've all had (are having) this problem.
At the moment i am a student, and every now and then, i have some
spare time. When i do, most of the time, I'm craving for something to
code, but i totally lack the inspiration to do so. I consider myself a
well, pretty skilled coder, and the basic applications are not enough
anymore. So i am seeking challenge.
My question, as yall are probably able to guess, is what do you guys
do to obtain inspiration? We all know sitting mindless behind our
overly cool macs, most of the time doesn't inspire, but then, what
does?
I have a few...
1) I keep an archive of applications both old and new that have cool
interface concepts. Some of the old KPT stuff was considered 'horrible
atrocities' by interface gurus. But some of them were simply inspired,
in my opinion. I have an interview with Kai from Computer Art(s?)
magazine, showing some of his never-released-interface concepts. So I
run these old apps, and try to figure out how I'd do the same or
similar things now.
2) I keep a folder in Safari named 'inspiration' that includes
screenshots, sites with cool software, and pictures of things that I
find inspiring. GoodBrush.com and Yenco.com, for example. Occasionally
I bookmark a quote or something I find. Citroen, Einstein, and Tesla
thunk differ'nt.
3) I use my ***AMAZING and AFFORDABLE*** iStill software to scan in
everything I find inspirational or cool looking, from Baron Karza's
helmet to this cool baby horned toad skeleton I found when I was a kid,
and look at those when I'm bored. What, you didn't expect a product
advertisement? ;-)
4) I keep a digital archive of other still photos of complex things
I've found, like an old piano, a decorative crossbow, and the inside of
a grandfather clock.
5) I have a wall bookcase full of sketch pads (I prefer Mead's
wirebound 5x7 sketch pads). I doodle, mainly interface design concepts,
and keep them there.
After I've done all of this, I usually go watch TV and drown my lack of
inspiration in Jack Daniels.
