Couldn't Spotlight just run the importer under a user with absolutely minimal priviledges? Say, only read access and only to the file it's path points to.

Malware could inject an importer with destructive code. You only
need to download the app, don't even have to launch it, and the next
time your hard drive indexes certain files, the importer wipes your
disk clean or whatever...
Though Apple could do it like Apple Help works and only scan an
app's importers folder when the app is first launched...
